In the year 2022, Ísponica received a grant from the Icelandic Student Innovation Fund to hire a student for an aquaponics mushroom research project. This grant was received in collaboration with Hólar University. From July to September 2022, Margaux Vanhussel was employed as a student researcher at Ísponica through the grant. She studied the cultivation of oyster mushrooms and lettuce in recirculating aquaponic systems using goldfish. As part of her project, Margaux constructed six research systems, monitored water quality and fish health daily, and collected data on the overall system health and production. She also assisted with other aspects of Ísponica, which included community outreach and writing social media updates on her research. Margaux is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Liège.
